Looking for a nice monitor, don't know where to start..

First let me start by saying I know nothing about monitors, I know about refresh rates, and that is about it.. I would like a 1440p monitor, but I don't really want to spend more than ~$250. Is this doable? If so, any recommendations? If not, any recommendations? Any help is appreciated.
