Learning HTML and Java

I'm in college and in both a Java intro class and a graphic design class that teaches HTML and CSS. I really want to learn them, but every class we just copy what the teacher types and I'm not really absorbing much. Are there any sites or anything that gives you like a assignment or a prompt for practice? Because I really feel like I'm not getting enough and I don't really know what else to do.
