Any books like Demian by Herman Hesse, which has a cold, sort of depressive/pessimistic world view to recommend?

I'm look for books which do not paint the world as colourful and happy, but more as a depressing, meaningless place. In Demian, the protagonist goes through periods in which everything is watched through a negative(/realistic?) lens, especially mainstream culture. I don't know if you're getting the gist of what I'm looking for, but I'm thankful for all recommendations!
