Starting my planning for next year!!!
Me and my buddy just got out of the Army and are shooting for a 2017 NOBO Thru-Hike.
We know a few things about rucking...which is not the same as backpacking. The longest we did in one go was 25 miles with 65lbs. Or we spent 2 weeks in the field rucking around like idiots everyday. We had crap issued stuff too. Point is, I know about packing heavy (55-70lbs for a week or two max). Once we started researching doing a thru-hike I started seeing Ultralight pop up a lot. I want to learn to pack light. What things should I be on the look out for? Terminology (ie Liters are used for packs), brands, places to get gear etc.
Also, I've watched a few vids on YouTube and see that (for the most part) people are bringing 2-3 sets of clothes plus what they are wearing. How is this possible? Are they just roughing it for a week rocking the same pair of clothes? Can you wash clothes fairly often? How often do you go through a trail town? I don't want to plan and do a bunch a math just to get out there and the numbers be totally off. I suppose most of what happens on the trail is dictated by you and how fast you want to go, money spent on initial gear etc.
Anyway, I've put together a VERY basic list of items I know/think I'll need. If anyone wants to give some pointers on what they used, how they used it, where they got it, and for how much on different items that would be awesome.
-Backpack- -Tent- -Food- -Water- -Rain proof gear- -Stuff sacks- -Sleeping Bag- -Sleeping Mat- -Stove- -Shoes- -First Aid- -Clothes- -Electronics- -Other- (I'm bringing 550 cord for my rope. Period.)
EDIT: I found the Ultralight subreddit and I guess what i'm asking for is a Pack List :D
