Horrible roommate refuses to find another tenant to replace me [Alberta]
I've been living with a roommate for a little over 6 months now, and we're both signed on to the lease.
Since then she has proved to be an awful roommate. 2 pets she does nothing to take care of, or even clean up after, Unpaid bills on multiple occasions, and just being general nuisance. Obviously I wanted out of this situation as the stress is starting to really affect my personal and professional life.
I gave her a verbal notice almost 2 months ago (January 1'st, 2016), and since then she has done nothing to find another roommate (She insisted to doing it to find someone she was comfortable with). I have another place lined up for the 1'st of March, and now I'm starting to get a little nervous as she still hasn't found anyone to take my place on the lease, and she is now telling me she wants to just live alone without a roommate, and keep the existing contract.
I'm not on great terms with my landlords right now, I lost my job when the economy took a turn for the worst, and have been really struggling to find another one (This one is my fault, I should have signed up for EI as soon as possible, I was stubborn and stupid and I really regret it), so I'm still behind on rent for January. Naturally and understandably they're upset by this, and it makes communication between us difficult. They have also been aware that I am moving out, they got the same notice time my landlords did.
This whole situation just feels like a mess, and I really don't know how to proceed. I should have gotten it in writing, I regret not doing that.
What are my options here, is there any way to fix this situation? I don't want to just disappear and make them hunt me down (Advice I keep seeing when researching this topic, that just doesn't feel right to me). I'm thinking of drafting up a letter stating that I gave her my notice as of the 1st of January, and making her sign it, but will that hold any legal weight if someone tries to come after me for future rent?
