A psych ward is no place for babies, right?

RANT

I work at a mental hospital in the adult psychiatry ward. At my place of employment, at any given time there are usually several people on maternity leave. Inevitably, this leads to the proud mothers visiting the workplace to show off their newly evacuated spawn to their colleagues (I usually hide so I don’t have to poorly feign interest). While it is a nuisance to have babies crying in the hallways where the off-ward offices are, what I find completely incomprehensible is that the moms will also go onto the locked psychiatric units (filled with people of varying degrees of mental stability), infants and/or kids in tow, to visit with co-workers who don’t have offices. In what universe is it appropriate to bring children or babies onto an acute adult psychiatric inpatient unit? These patients are often formally mandated to be here, and unless you know each patient and their propensities (the vast majority are cooperative and not dangerous) it is best to be cautious. It doesn’t seem like many others are bothered by this, or see it as a potential safety issue; they coo and gush over the little bastards. As someone who actively dislikes most human entities under the age of say... 20, I feel as if perhaps I’m being biased due to my distaste. Am I crazy? More generally, why do people insist on bringing their progeny to work in the first place?

TLDR: work at a nut house, mat leave workers bring their babies onto locked psych wards to visit, WHY?!

Edit: Thanks for everyone's feedback, I was starting to question my sanity. I'll see what I can do about this.
