How does one rank up?

I have heard it's from beating teams that are a higher rank than you, but it's been 4 weeks, I have played multiple gold and silver teams, but I am still in copper 1. I have a W/D of 2.4 and a K/D of 1.0 (I am a noob to this game so I am not sure if that matters), I think that's good, because I don't loose very often, but it's depressing after every match I am still in COPPER 1. I am thinking about selling the game, I have been on so much I see the same players every now and then.
