Why do people consider the vive chaperone camera when choosing?

I am just confused. Lots of people say it is one of the main reasons they want it. But based on the reasons they have cited when I asked them, I wanted to clarify that some things That the camera cannot do. I hope to help those out there still swaying between headsets.

  1. Mixed/augmented reality: it just can't do it, some people (most would not be on this Reddit) think it can. It has no depth sending or stereoscopic abilities. So sorry but it won't happen.

  2. The chaperone overlay is 3D and 1:1 so it will allow you to not have to take the HMD off: Again, not true, it is more of an outline than an image. And even if it were an image it has no stereoscopic 3D and is definitely NOT 1:1 tracking. So doing simple tasks like reaching for something or typing or reading a screen will be impossible or awkward for the above reasons.

  3. It will prevent you from stepping on obstacles within the play space (pets furniture etc.): another misconception, since it has no depth sensing or stereo capability, it will not know to activate the camera if a pet or furniture is in front of it. In order to activate the overlay, you MUST move near a chaperone border. Furthermore, the overlay will be seen behind the already existing chaperone "grid" people had already. So due to not being warned about stuff in your play space without manually engaging the overlay (which would not be useful, since you would need to already know there is an obstacle to turn on the overlay, hence defeating the Purpose of sensing pets or other obstacles before you run into them).

So in conclusion (this conclusion is more my opinion than the above) it seems to add virtually no usefulness that the "grid" didn't have already. Furthermore, the grid can be done using only software. Whereas the camera needs hardware, which adds more to the cost than the functionality. It seems like I( and others) would quickly get over the novelty and gimmick of it, and become annoyed with it pulling us unnecessarily more out of the game than the regular "grid". In my opinion it is useless and Valve should've chosen something more deserving to be their "breakthrough" with the Vive CV1 and Vive Pre. They could've done something to set them apart even more from oculus than the room scale does (which is debatable anyway but I'm not getting that fanboy war started).

Despite my opinion at the bottom, this has been to clarify things for those considering the Vive and the Oculus (both amazing HMDs and I wish I could have both). I don't want people to make a desicion like this based off of false facts.

Please point out any facts I got wrong (kindly) and I hope the info is useful!

Btw my source is various TESTED videos and online articles I can't name specifically. Also friends who have done a demo.

EDIT:

Thank you for clarifying stuff for me! I feel like there was a miscommunication though. I went in expecting some of the stuff may be wrong. So I more meant for the WHOLE THREAD to be a way for people to learn more about what it can and can't do, not just the OP.

I realize I was wrong about some stuff. Thank you for helping me (and the friends who wanted me to post this since they didn't understand the camera) learn more about it! :)

Thank you for your productive comments!
