Your picks for the best of author's notes from the manga?
Here are some of my favorites from parts III-V:
VOL. 21–22
It's nothing to brag about, but I'm horrible at remembering things. I can barely remember what I did for fun as a kid, or what such-and-such TV show was about. The other day I saw Rie Miyazawa (a Japanese actress) but I completely forgot her name. When I asked someone what her name was, they laughed at me. (I should mention that I'm a huge Rie Miyazawa fan.) I'm really worried about my future...
(continued)
I could stay depressed about my bad memory, but that's a negative way to live. Let's look on the bright side and list the advantages of having a bad memory.
(1) You can reread a book and see a movie over and over and enjoy it as much as the first time.
(2) If you make an inconvenient promise, you can pretend that you forgot about it and still be forgiven.
(3) This is the most important thing: you can keep coming up with ideas without being held back by convictions or the past.
I'll leave no comments on this one.
VOL. 50
"I must be the only one who cares, but I often nearly drown myself. Not in the sea or in a river, no, I narrowly escape death drinking a glass of water. I only need a mouthful of water to suffocate, and I find myself unable to breathe. Generally, if I stay calm, I manage to get my breath back little by little, but recently, I almost passed out. That was a close one. That day, I miraculously escaped death, to everyone's indifference."
Holy shit… Now that you think of it, some stands used to hide in the glasses of water or people's throats.
VOL. 59
I'll carry on with my praising of movies scenes that make me enthusiastic. I like it when a chase between cops and gangsters is happening when it rains. I can't express what I'm feeling with words alone, and that's what's making these exalting scenes so particular. Cops and rain simply go well together.…
Uhh ok
…The scene when we see a man riding a horse across the steppe amazes me too. When I saw that for the first time, I instinctly understood what being cool meant!
SBR anyone?
VOL. 29 (as translated by u/Daisangen here)
I think there are a lot of scary things in this world, but I tried to figure out the Araki Hirohiko Top 10 terrifying things list.
- Death
- Creatures that can stick to the roof (cockroaches and such)
- Delusions
- Acquaintances
- Getting bad luck in fortune telling
- The hospital
- Environmental degradation
- Confined spaces
- Strangers
And the magnificent, shining number one is...!
- The dark
What do you think, everyone? Are your fears different?
I like how Araki put "Death" below "Acquaintances" on the list.
Also, creatures walking on the ceiling, huh? I guess Dio walking on walls counts too.
VOL. 43
Workplace Wildlife Watch Part 1
The Most common bug we see in the studio is the ladybug. It gets through the screen door like it's nothing. It seems like it flies to the door, then climbs up over it somehow. I checked the top of the door, and sure enough, there's a 3mm gap right at the top of the frame. That must be how they get in. They don't sting or anything, so whenever we see them we just shoo them back outside. But then they always find their way back in.
Giorno's pins?
VOL. 15
When you start working in the real world, you're often asked to trade business cards. But ever since I became a manga artist, I've had to say, "Oh, I don't have a business card. Sorry!" Well, I've finally designed a business card with the mark you see above on it. Now even if I'm overseas, people can figure out what progression I work in. The international sign of a manga artist: the big callus on the finger.
