A muslim version of Jefferson Bible possible?

(Quran / Hadith)

I have been wondering for a while - you know how insular and intolerant muslims can be regarding novel ideas? I think we are approaching this problem wrongly. Let's say our goal is to liberate muslims from orthodox Islam - and make them more secular. Instead of confronting them with atheistic ideas (which might elicit a strong reaction)- maybe it's better to reach some middle ground.

I think secularisation is a process. It won't happen overnight. By proclaiming Islam is outright false and jumping straight to atheism we might alienate the more progressive or moderate muslims. Now we all know being a progressive or liberal muslim is a useful transitional phase. The goal is to get as many muslims to this transitional phase.

So maybe we can start with a muslim version of the Jefferson Bible? A compilation of Koran and Sunnah with only the good bits - eschewing the supernatural and the violence? Perhaps when the moderate/progressive muslims see this, they are more inclined to reform Islam altogether?

In my view, muslims see atheistic ideals as an antagonistic and a grave assault against their belief. They would tolerate anything - even bombs being dropped on them - but the second you mention atheism, they would lose their minds and behead you (if they can).

I mean, Europe had reformation. So they must've start somewhere. But I don't think we can apply the european model. Islam is too different - furthermore the legacy of colonisation, the different cultural values, and the different societal makeup (christianity is still quite a white man's religion) would make the muslim problem unique, to say the least.

My proposal is to start from Scripture - the very crux of Islam. I mean even if we water the Koran and Sunnah down, it's still practically the Koran and the Sunnah. It's not something muslims can reject outright.

The trick is to get muslims to buy it - and make them feel less guilty doing so. I mean a religious book is like a product you know - like an iphone. If you make it do something useful, have attractive features and package it nicely I'm sure you can sell it.

Besides, muslims already cherry pick. So why don't we empower the cherry pickers? Imagine a muslim book, that's so tolerant and not boringly self- repeating that even atheists can't complain? Why hasn't this been made?
