ap mid itemisation vs ad

since the zhonyas rush is so cost inefficient and kind of shits on your damage in the early game, I was wondering would just building rod of ages be a better alternative? sure, you'll do fuck all damage in lane sitting on a catalyst, but the extra sustain will help you stay in lane longer against a zed or talon, the health obviously makes you tankier and when you finish it you get a pretty solid item overall.

I've started trying it on lux and was wondering if it might be worth it on ahri as well. the only issue I was thinking is that it delays your cdr, but I guess if you have 15% scaling or 10% flat, + ionians and blue buff that leaves you with 30/35% cdr without even having to buy a morello.

it just feels like with zhonya rush you get no cdr, no mana regen and to be honest it's like you do zero damage because you go oom all the time but have the same amount of ap that you would finishing another item.
