[Unclaim/Resign] Life & Death
Clarice Peake had barely recovered from Lucerys being sick when the contractions began in earnest. It was a new room where she would give birth and would likely become the new nursery as well. There were maesters attending her as well as nurses too. This being her third pregnancy it was meant with considerable less unease than the previous two. Not that it was an easy experience nor something she was eager for, but something she could weather. The maesters encouraged her to begin pushing and so it began.
The guards at the door had orders to not allow Lyarra Stark in. The young lady’s enthusiasm was good, but Clarice had instructed Lyarra that she would need to earn Clarice’s trust to attend. Something that had not occurred in any way. Corlys was sitting beside her with her hand in his. She was nervous with him there, for the experience of it. Clarice had been in a habit of shielding her feelings and emotions at all costs throughout her life, yet giving birth…was not an occasion where she was typically able to do so. She had ideas on it still as she took a few deep breaths to gain her strength back before returning to trying to help her child, or her thought children, along.
Attendants patted her forehead with wet towels, trying to offer her water should she need it, or anything else. In truth, she had taken to often biting the tip of her tongue when she pushed. Trying to mask her emotions and the pain of the experience from Corlys. The assembly of those involved were encouraging, but it became a swirl of cheering, instruction, and support. Clarice tried to pick out voices, though only Corlys’ seemed to register at all. She turned her head to him, breathing deeply, her amber eyes glancing up at his face. Someone mentioned blood.
There was always a greater tension when it seemed you neared the infant coming out, but this time as that tension gave way it did not go away. A maester held one baby, yet they were expecting more. It was what she expected too, twins. Exhaustion washed over her, but she would not stop. Clarice almost smiled though she realized her teeth were clamped down on her tongue as she pushed one last time until the second baby was finally out. Lightheadedness swarmed her as she tried to breathe. Her mouth was full of liquid, blood from the tongue. Shifting her sweat ridden head to face Corlys, to look down at her children. But her head would not move at the effort to lift. Clarice could feel blood begin to trickle out of her mouth as her forced smile returned, act confident. Face it with pride. Somewhere inside her said that, her father.
Glazed over amber eyes stared blankly as Clarice passed.
