So, does linking the flame not kill you?

At least not right away? Because if that giant Lord of Cinder is the same one from DkS 2, then he was walking around and fighting just fine, unless I'm missing something huge. I always thought linking the fire just consumed the person right away but it looks like they actually were granted power and ruled.
