What Really Makes People Hate Nu-Metal?
I think all of us have come into contact with Nu-Metal bands before, me personally my middle school days and freshman year of high school were filled with nothing but the stuff.
Nowadays, I have settled into listening to underground and independent rock and punk rock bands, however, I've been around the block of genres, from alternative, to folk, to grunge, to metal, and yes, to nu-metal.
My question is, what is it about nu-metal bands that make them so utterly unlikable? I can't say I have much enjoyment listening to them now, but I wouldn't say I'm outright disgusted by them. Yeah, Limp Bizkit is a dimwitted band, Korn is unreasonably sad, and Slipknot is overly violent, but I think some credit can be given in small doses. As a musician of several instruments I can honestly say that some nu-metal songs are NOT as simple as some other genre's songs, I'm not saying they're better, I'm just saying they're not as bone-headed and dumbed-down as many people might think.
Yeah, the lyrics can be pretty 7th grade, but many other bands in other genres can float the same way. Not only that, but Johnathan Davis has proven his vocal range can actually be above that of just screaming and ranting gibberish scats.
Does anyone else think Nu-metal warrants a bit of unnecessary hatred? I wouldn't say I'm defending it, I'm just wondering why it is exactly that bands in the genre receive such abashment and also what elements seem to come up in most nu-metal bands? (Just so I can avoid those elements in my song-writing and compositions lol)
EDIT: I realize my post is a bit scattered and short, I just wanted to know what the general consensus of r/music was on Nu-Metal as a genre.
