Questions about a Civic del Sol
(Apologies for the wall of text in advance, I don't know how much background info you will need. Also sorry about formatting, I'm on mobile)
Recently I've started to notice a parked del Sol in my neighborhood. Since I've taken interest in it, it hasn't moved at all. It sits under a car port with blankets over the tires (West Texas sun lol) and it's accumulated quite a lot of dust and dirt. I haven't been that intrigued by it until I had my first accident, which broke both my headlamps and one turn signal, among other things. This has made it illegal to drive, do its been parked until we can get parts. Now, just to preface, I'm a broke highschooler, and I love cars and trucks and learning about the different designs and makes, I don't know much about the true mechanics of them. Also, since my truck is parked, I'm looking for something that is cheap and runs or will run on a small budget.
Since I've started car shopping, I've learned that a del Sol can be picked up relatively cheap, depending on year, trim, and condition. The del Sol I found in my neighborhood is between a '93 and a '95 (because it doesn't have the right front bumper to be a '96 or '97). I'm also pretty sure it's a base level S coupé, because if the lack of badging for Si or VTEC. The del Sol us owned by an old man who has lived in the house for 20+ years. His wife is deceased, and I think the del Sol was her car. When I talked about this with my parents, they said it hasn't moved since we've lived in our house, which is approximately 5 years.
My questions are these:
Would it be wrong to go ask if he would be willing to sell it, despite it not being listed? If that would be okay, what would a reasonable price be? When I plug it into Edmund's, I get anywhere from $416 to $1,410. When I use KBB, I get $1,703. This sounds good, but when I research del Sols online, the forum posts say they go for $3,000+. And finally, if I buy this car, is there any specific problems to watch out for? I know this is a lot of wishful thinking, and that I'm probably putting the carriage before the horse, but I'd still like r/cars opinion on the matter. Thanks!
