I am podinger about what are some smart ways to invest time/money that turns into career advancement?

Beyond the obvious (degrees, buying lunch, etc), what have you noticed that works really well in oder to rise one's profile beyond the current firm? Anyone tried doing industry speeches/panels, LinkedIn blogs (seen that increasingly popular amongst partners), etc?
