Gravel and Bare Feet

Feedback Received!

Three hot
Summers ago
When the heat and humidity
Pressed down like flapjacks on a griddle.
On a night
Where the stars shone bright as the fire we sat around,
And the fire in our eyes
After a bottle of vodka.
Pass, swig, pass,
shwig, phass,
shwigsh, phassh
...
Metal keys
Mumbling.
...
Ignition
Grumbling.
...
Slam!
The door shuts with
Drunken confidence.
Black asphalt
Sways;
Swerves.
-Stay in the lines-
...
Crunch
Gravel under rubber.
-Hold on-
Almost home.
Missed the turn
by the Oak tree.
Turning
Around.
Narrow
Gravel.
Consciousness
S l i p s.
Too much gas.
Precipitous
Ditch.
Brake..
Brake!
Too late.
...
I hang,
Held by my seat belt.
My door hits dirt.
The other door
Is too heavy.
The rear window
Is too small.
The rear window is smashed into a thousand shapes.
Is my foot okay?
The night swallows me.
Is this a dream?
...
God, are you there?
Send a car.
Send a lightning bolt.
Send anything.
...
Send me home.
...
Phone lost.
Sandals lost.
Shirt lost.
Walking.
Walking.
Walking.
...
Consciousness returning
With the sun;
Each step burning
With the sun.
Memory of last night
Black as the soles of my feet.

I find my house;
I walk inside;
Mother is in the kitchen.
"How was the lake?"
"..
I lost the truck"
I told her, with vodka breath.
We spent all day looking;
We never found it.

I knew what hour my father finished work;
I feared his verdict.
I didn't see him that day,
I guess he was just too tired;

It turns out the truck got towed
An hour after my pilgrimage.
No foul play suspected.
"Summer's over."
Dad said as we
Retrieved the truck.
It wasn't.
It was only June.
