How thick is the wood? Will bases topple if Im halfway in?

For someone who doesn't build terrain, but jealously lives the passion through others(vicariously); why the circles? Are the tree sections removable for some reason?
The cirles are made to be pulled out when required by gameplay (like warmachine) you can see here on another base what it look like : http://imgur.com/a/FD9pN Another solution would be to use woodland scenic like tree that can be removed stump by stump.
The trees are usually removable for ease of moving models into and through the forest. Also some games have rules for being in the forest that makes it desirable to have as many models in there as you can.
