Romantic happenings of the Sahaba (love & loss) - the story of Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr & 'Atikah bint Zayd [part 2]
[Part 1]
After divorcing, I've read different accounts of what happened next. Some sources say that the story spread enough that it reached the ears of the Prophet (s), who rescinded the divorce. Others say that Abu Bakr saw how distraught his son was, so he softened his stance and allowed them to get back together. Not sure which is the more authentic narration, although it's possible there is truth in both. The next verses of poetry that were recited by Abdullah (r):
أعاتك قد طلقت في غير ريبة ... وروجعت للأمر الذي هو كائن
كذلك أمر الله غاد ورائح ... على الناس فيه ألفة وتباين
وما زال قلبي للتفرق طائرا ... وقلبي لما قد قرب الله ساكن
ليهنيك أني لا أرى فيه سخطة ... وأنك قد تمت عليك المحاسن
وأنك ممن زين الله وجهه ... وليس لوجه زانه الله شائن
O 'Aatik, I divorced you without a doubt,
But I've returned to this matter which has just played out.
In this way God plans the ebb and flow,
Where some people come together and others let go.
Still - while because of our split, my heart remains distressed,
It is at ease; for what God has brought close has put it to rest.
Are you pleased? In beholding you, my heart sees no flaw,
All good traits have been gathered in you, such that I'm left in awe.
Your face has beauty only granted by the Divine,
And it's impossible for defects to interfere with God's design.
This time, he was more careful about managing his time so that the time he spent with 'Atikah did not interfere with his duties. He took part in the battle of Ta'if, fighting alongside the Prophet Muhammad (s). A spear struck him and it was a fatal blow - he later passed away in Madinah, radiyallahu 'anhu.
'Atikah mourned the loss of her husband and recited some poetry of her own, in which she swore she would never marry again. Eventually she went on to marry Umar ibn al-Khattab. Ali asked Umar for permission to speak to her shortly after their nikkah, and when granted permission, reminded her of those lines of poetry and asked her why she was marrying again after swearing that she wouldn't. She started to cry, Umar told Ali off for making his wife cry lol, and they had a good married life until Umar also passed away.
She's a very interesting Sahabiyyah who married great men. She also married az-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam (funny story from this relationship as well), and it's narrated that Ali ibn Abi Talib, 'Amr ibn al-'As and Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr all proposed to her. Al-Hasan ibn Ali was her last husband.
Subhan Allah she must have been a strong woman to have experienced so many deaths of her loved ones. Every husband that she had passed away before she did.
