Bullet trains

Can you book the bullet trains from tokyo to kyoto and back beforehand? I'm going during golden week, have my living arrangements squared up. All that is left is the travel from tokyo to kyoto and back.

If you're really travelling during Golden Week, you'd better reserve those trips as soon as you arrive at a JR service counter (or "Midori no Madoguchi").

Do you really think it won't be possible to get a trip to kyoto or osaka on that week without a reservation? Just wondering because that's when I will be there.

It should be possible. It just might not be when you want it. You should make a reservation as early as possible

Sure, you'll just have to queue up with everyone else.

Alright well i'll try to makea reservations. I don't think getting to kyoto will be a problem if I leave at 5 AM from tokyo on the first train(was nearly empty when I went last time I was in japan). Getting back would probably be the problem.

Going from tokyo to Kyoto 5/5. Return to tokyo on 5/9. Would you recommend getting JR Pass and reserving tickets at the aiport on 5/3 or just purchasing tickets in advance (and where to purchase them?)

Are you a tourist from overseas?
Will you have an active JR Pass?
What is the rest of your itinerary? ie. any more long distance train trips at all?
What date do you arrive at which airport at what time, and what date do you wish to go to Kyoto?

With a JR Pass you can't make reservations before you arrive in Japan for travel along the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto.

If you don't use/need a JR Pass then there are various agents which can purchase train tickets on your behalf.

Yes, from USA Havent bought a JR Pass Arriving Tokyo 5/3 at 3:30pm. Going to Kyoto 5/5. Return to tokyo on 5/9. Maybe a day trip to Nara during kyoto stay.

Would you recommend getting JR Pass or just purchasing tickets in advance (and where?)
