Begin with a question.
Nothing too demanding,
Hide all the overthought, overwrought planning:
“How was your day?”
And I really do care about what you have to say.
I feel every molecule you vibrate migrate towards my face
And as if laced with meth I take a deep breathe,
Swallowing those sound waves so they can propagate the depths of my heart.
Respond with the usual.
Nothing untruthful, per se,
But not anything to indicate that however remarkable my day,
Regardless of how many suffering lives I saved or untraveled roads I paved,
This has been the defining moment.
Let the conversation flow.
As with all good prose, it slowly unfolds, tending towards its natural close.
At first, we jointly oppose, but then we condone this gentle doze
Imposed by such high doses of our harmonizing voices.
I know it may be pointless, but know this:
When we do close our eyes, I’m not falling asleep.
Rather, I’m thinking,
And when I think, it’s mostly of you.
I’m thinking of everything word I’ve ever said,
Worried you’ll misconstrue them for what I really meant.
I’m thinking
And thinking
Of whether you’re thinking of me, too.
