Debian hardware events

Hey, I have this problem where I want to react to hardware events with my own scripts. I have seen people advice doing it with udev but I'm quite sure this is not really the intention of udev to begin with. So how do I go about doing this kind of thing?

Wikipedia on udev

udev is a device manager for the Linux kernel. As the successor of devfsd and hotplug, udev primarily manages device nodes in the /dev directory. At the same time, udev also handles all user space events raised while hardware devices are added into the system or removed from it, including firmware loading as required by certain devices.

Why?

I might have the wrong idea about udev or misconstrued a post by lennart on this topic where I interpreted it as misuse of udev.

Do you have a link to the article?

Perhaps I have been misusing udev. Do you have a link to that post?
