mental health day

I have c-ptsd and anxiety is my main symptom. Two nights ago I went to this huge social event where I didn't know a lot of people. I've mostly recovered from the hangover, but I'm not feeling great in general.

Lots of fatigue, body pain, anxiousness and so on.

I just wanna dive into escapism for a bit so join me? Tell me about the books you like reading, how do you cope with bad days, recommend me an easy food I can make if I make it out the door to the corner shop, show me nice internet things?

:)

Book recommendations:

Watership Down - Richard Adams Set in England's Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Alone and desperate, Miranda must struggle to overcome her own prejudices and contempt if she is understand her captor, and so gain her freedom.

I cope with bad days by cuddling my cats, weeping on my boyfriend, and trying to go outside. A walk in the woods, a bus ride to the seaside, or even just walking in a completely unfamiliar direction to see if you can get lost are good.

If you can get to a supermarket, you could try Key Lime Pie. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2155644/key-lime-pie

Here's a Cockatiel singing the theme from My Neighbor Totoro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7D-1RG-VRk

I LOOOVE we have always lived in the castle, I read it first time earlier this year and I was just floored by how much I enjoyed it!

the other two doesn't sound much like my thing tbh, but I'll check out goodread reviews.

I wish I had cats to cuddle, I was thinking of going outside actually, there is a small pub in the area I just moved to and they do nice food so two birds with one, slightly wobbly rock.

birds are so good <3

Well the second book is kind of eerie and melancholy, but in its own way. the third book is just completely disturbing, and the end is quite horrible which I liked.

I passed by a pub called The Cock Inn last Tuesday. That was amusing. What food will you get?

1
WorkingNinjOP•

Lots of cock pubs in jolly england. There's a pub in Dreamfall chapters called The rooster and kitten (the cock and pussy) barman has the best apron http://36.media.tumblr.com/68246557d08213f1a2efd2922d2ecef4/tumblr_nt30v2megR1thr4nro1_500.png

I'm not sure what I'll get yet, possibly burgers or bangers and mash.

Have you read The Magus by John Fowles? It's brilliant.

I love escapism, I love reading travel stories. Not the long ones where its a like a whole book but just the short 5-10 page ones. Its like a little snippet from someones adventure and you get to wonder how they got to that point in their life and what they're gonna do after.

When I have my bad days I usually withdraw, drink waaaay more coffee than I should and listen to some music. I like slow folk music and movie instrumentals when I'm feeling a little somber.

1
WorkingNinjOP•

I'm all about escapism, I am a poet so I read a lot of poetry and they are perfect to me.

I've had to give up caffeinated coffee cause of my anxiety unfortunately, it used to be my go to as well.

do you like Anais mitchell? Her album hades town is a favourite.

1
not_a_squatch•

I have not heard of her before. I'm a big fan of the Lumineers and the Avett Brothers, though a lot of their stuff isn't as melancholy.

Those anxious days are just the worst, it'll be a new day soon enough though! I've just finished reading 'Savage' by Richard Laymon, it's a fantastic book!

'Savage' by Richard Laymon

oooh that looks a bit to, ehehe, savage for me :p (sorry)

I know it'll pass, I just also know I have to keep existing in the time it takes for it to pass.

1
KrispyKokonut•

It's definitely quite, well, savage! Jack the Ripper is a main character and we all know what he was like!

If you see me post around here you'll probably realize pretty quickly that listening to music is the most important thing in my life. It's my solace for everything. I like to listen to tunes that relate to my life a lot, so here's a tune you might like if you're like me:

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - "Mental Health"

But yeah, I have playlists and playlists of different genres and lyrical themes that I'll put on depending on how I am feeling.

Tell me about the books you like reading

I really like fantasy. The Wheel of Time and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series are my favorites.

My favorite books ever are Brave New World and Heart of Darkness. I will always put Brave New World over 1984 in terms of which is the better dystopian novel and is more realistic/prophetic.

This was great, thank you.

I really like making themed playlists as well so I feel you.

Have you read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin? Dystopian Russian novel, it's quite good, I enjoyed it more than 1984 as well.

Anyways most books (and fiction in general) bores me so I write my own stuff or at least try to. Writing and worldbuilding, good escapism.

1
WorkingNinjOP•

oh my gosh that's so cute, the squeeky shoes just really got to me for some reason :p

I write my own stuff as well, but my brain isn't working enough to write today.

1
Conny_and_TheoSibling Xwedodah Lover•

Yeah those shoes are lovely...

Anyways what sort of stuff d'you usually write?

1
WorkingNinjOP•

Poetry mostly. I used to write short stories and working myway up to novels, but realised I could create the world and stories I was after in a shorter format. And it doesn't have to rhyme :p

A okay I see.... I'm mainly stories myself but recently this year I've been doing haiku on occasion, quick and dirty and all that.

My favorite escapism is reading books from my childhood/teen years that I really enjoyed; a wonderful combination of enjoyable reading and nostalgia.

Mandy by Julie Andrews (yes, Sound of Music Julie Andrews) is one of my favorites. It is about a young female orphan that discovers an abandoned cottage in the woods surrounding her orphanage. Such a sweet and endearing story. Definitely very soothing.

Matilda by Roald Dahl. I am sure most of us know Matilda, but it is a definite soothing read. Another book about a young girl; incredibly intelligent but thought dumb by her family and the superintendent of her school. She discovers amazing powers that allow her to fight back.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede. A princess that hates being proper and decides to volunteer as the princess to a dragon. She has many wonderful adventures in which the reader can recognize other fairy tale stories worked into the series. So very funny.

I like reading art catalogues, mystery novels, and non-fiction about sociology (educational reform, class issues, poverty, elders), psychology, and architecture.

I cope lately by not coping, meaning I lay around under a bunch of blankets with the blinds closed until I fall asleep.

Easy food: wash and cut up 4 Yukon Gold potatoes. Boil the pieces on medium heat for 25 minutes. Drain the water; add 1/4 milk, some black pepper, diced sweet pepper, olive oil, and chopped onion. Mash until creamy. Give a pinch of sea salt. Delish.

Nice internet things..uhm..I recommend the Tea category on Pinterest, or Winter. Lots of soothing photos.

1
WorkingNinjOP•

Thank you.

edit: I want to write something more clever but my brain fritzed. Haha.

I am firmly in the fiction and fantasy literature box, although I read some academic papers now and then, reading one on Jane Eyre now.

Not coping is a valid coping mechanism for a bit, I certainly went through my time doing that, I hope you manage to get out of the blanket nest eventually.

I managed to buy a can of soup, now I'm getting hungry again, but dubious about my commitment about going back outside.

This is a Youtube channel called "You Suck At Cooking" and this video is about how to make a nice breakfast sandwich. It makes me laugh.. so.

And this YouTube channel is called, "The School of Life" headed by a favorite author of mine, Alain de Botton, often has a very poignant grace about it.

Hope the weather's nice where you are.

Haha I can't believe I felt emotionally connected to some eggs.

Thanks!

As far as easy food, I like this ramen called Tokyo Noodle. Don't know why, I just love it. And these are some of my books. I'm not very into fiction but I loved Shogun. Movie was good, too.

1

Ramen is great, but without egg or vegetables they get a bit boring after a while. your bookshelf looks awesome.
