  • Hae writes in her diary that she feels guilty because she might be the reason for the severed ties between Adnan and his mother: Wow I am a lazy writer but I just read over every single entry and I decided to take my time to make college scholarship applications, etc. Well for a few days up until last Friday, he was going to move out of his house and for the longest time I felt guilty as hell for being part of that severed tie between him and his mother. but he didn't move out of his house, and I just found out. Because his father is pretty sick.

  • According to Principal Lynette Woodley: Adnan's parents came to the dance. They were looking for him and stood outside for a while. Then they came and they asked for him. They were circling the cafeteria looking for him and the found him and brought him outside. And they talked for a while. And then Adnan went into the dance and brought Hae out and they were talking with the parents. The parents were getting upset, so I went over and told them I can't allow them to talk to her. I sent Hae ack into the dance and left Adnan with his parents.

  • According to Aisha, Hae was embarrassed and left the dance holding hands with another guy to distract Adnan's parents. Adnan leaves the dance with his parents, then returns on a bicycle.

Saturday, October 31, 1998

  • Adnan, Krista, Aisha, Lorna, and a group of friends go to Adventure World (now Six Flags) as planned for "HallowScream" Event.

  • This event was organized by Krista's Church: Milford Mill United Methodist Church. Krista had invited Adnan, and Adnan, in turn, had invited Hae.

  • Adnan had purchased two tickets to this event (for him and Hae.)

  • Hae cancels at the last minute, and does not attend, as they had all planned.

  • Halloween

  • Hae and Adnan officially call it quits and break up. This is the first break up.

  • According to Krista, Hae is the one who broke it off.

Monday, November 2, 1998

  • Hae's note to Adnan: With the way things have been since 7:45 am this morning now I'm more certain I'm making the right choice. The more fuss you make, the more I'm determined to do what I gotta do. I really don't think I can be in a relationship like we had...

  • I'll be busy today, tomorrow and probably til Thursday. I've got other things to do. Better than give you any hope that we'll get back together...

  • 8AM: Adnan is in Hope Schab's classroom. The phone rings. Hope answers and it is Hae calling.

  • Hae: Pretend I'm a teacher

  • Hope: Okay

  • Hae: Adnan and I got in a fight and I don't want him to know that I'm here. So I won't be coming to you. I'm in Ms. Paoletti's room if you need me, you come down and get me.

  • After the call, Adnan stays in Hope's classroom. According to Hope: Adnan stayed in my room and started talking to me about relationships and my opinion on what should one do if religion got in they way of a relationship -- should you let someone go? Should you try to work it out? He stayed there most of first period. Finally I had to leave and asked him to leave as well.

  • He was in the far corner of the classroom looking out of the window, and was also asking questions. Along the lines of what should one do if they are in love with someone who is not their religion. Should one – should one break up over this, or is love strong enough that it can overcome everything. What will happen down the road if, you know, you were to marry someone of a different faith.

  • On the back of the note, Aisha writes: Here's the thing. Hae's pregnant, and having mood swings.

  • Adnan: You should ask her to make a list of her symptoms and compare it with the list on the overhead.

  • Aisha: Yeah, let me ask her. Are your breasts tender?

  • Adnan: Line crossed out.

  • Aisha: Maybe she was pregnant. She had an abortion on Saturday while we went to Adventure World.

  • Adnan: Her clumsy self probably tripped and fell on her way to the clinic and caused an abortion.

  • Aisha: She would never think she's pregnant. And every time I do something with a guy, I think I am.

  • Adnan: Whenever you kiss a guy, you probably think you are pregnant. She's scheduled for a sonograms and she's still in denial.

  • Aisha: Not that bad, for me, for her hell yeah.

  • Shortly after the dance, Lynette Woodley, Assistant Principal, asks Hae if she wants to be in the relationship because it is causing problems in the family.

Who would have thought we would end like this? Who would've imagined the amount of pain that comes with a broken heart? I know I'm doing the right thing. Call me selfish but this pains is way less than what it would be if we stayed together. More hostility at his house. I love you. Oh screw it. I still love you. I would give any and everything to be in your arms and my heart's not that strong. Forgive me, love. All the pain I've caused you will end soon if you'll move on.

So much to say that I love him brings tears to my eyes. I love you to death. I'd love to be with you right now. I saw him at track meet when he ran that 400x2. He's so dedicated to running and it makes him seem very sexy... Our table as usual where he kissed me and sighed when I drove away from him. Then we're gone. I know, as I always have, that Adnan's warm smile is the one I can't live without. You love the one you can't live without. I can't imagine my life without his smile, his (??), and most importantly, his love. I feel so guilty though -- about Don. I don't know why in the hell I have such thoughts. It's all because of (??) and her ideas. I really kind of wanted to tell Adnan about the whole Don thing, but I was so afraid. What if it pushes him away? Will he (??) me? Will he still love me? I would die without his love. I will just keep it a secret. But what if he finds out and hates me? No I can't tell him. He wouldn't forgive me because I don't forgive myself. I can't believe myself at all. Maybe I should commit suicide. Should I get on my knees and beg forgiveness? Would he forgive me, or would he build up his walls again? I love you so much, Adnan. What have I done? Why do I keep hurting you? I swear I don't mean to. Can't you find it in your heart to forgive me? You're my one and only forever.

  • Hae gives Adnan the second, and last, breakup note.

  • According to Ja'uan, Hae and Adnan broke up in December. Things weren’t working out. Hae said she liked someone else. Adnan and Ja’uan talked about it.

  • Ja’uan says Adnan was shocked by the second break up. Hae had said she loved Adnan, so Adnan didn’t understand how her feelings could change so fast because she liked someone else.

  • Hae wrote Adnan a letter. And made it clear. She didn’t love Adnan any more.

  • 3PM: Adnan was mad. There was a school trip that day. And when they got back to school, Adnan’s eyes were watery, and he was flushed. Ja’uan had never seen Adnan like that before.

  • By the time the class returned from that field trip, Adnan had read Hae’s second break up note, and was more upset than he had been when Hae wrote the first note, a month earlier.

  • The first time, it had been about what his parents did at the dance. This time, it was a about another guy.

  • According to Debbie: Hae told me that she had finally broken up with him -- they had broken up and Adnan hadn't taken it very well. That's what she told me. Adnan told me as well that they had broken up and he was over her.

  • Approx: Adnan tells Mrs. Kramer that he and Hae broke up this time because "It gets too crowded with three people." He was referring to Don.

  • Approximate: Adnan tells Yasser that they broke up just because it was too much of problem for him hiding it from his parents. And that it was a mutual understanding that they couldn’t go on. Because Hae’s parents didn’t know about the relationship, either. Adnan tells Yasser it was a mutual break up.
