Noob-y questions about RRSP limits

-Is this a standard limit set by govt/otherBody or a unique, individual limit (based on your salary,credit etc)?

-Is this an annual limit or a lifetime limit? I've been reading comments here about how people expecting big increases in salary keep from investing in RRSP until later on in life, to get the best tax benefits. But that would there is a lifetime limit ?
