r/TheFence's Song of the Day Database Update Day 10: Peace to the Mountain

While The Audience is the big one for the album, this one's the big one for me, the song I want played at my funeral. I remember sitting down with my headphones once The Color Before the Sun was released on stream, and like many other Children of the Fence, took it from the top. I'll admit, as is probably evident from many of my SoTD posts, much of this album didn't resonate with me. "Peace to the Mountain" does.

The Real: Claudio reflects back on his real life, his creative life, the birth of his son, and his return to his old country home, the metaphorical mountain. It delves into his personality, how much he fixates on death and the passing of time, and how that passing changes us all.

"Only so much I can change, an artist I wish I could've made

Am I irrelevant?

Or will I get a chance to change, change the colors permanent?"

These lyrics question the impact his life will have on reality. The colors are a metaphor for the state of the world when he entered it, and he wonders if his life and the things he does will have any long term or meaningful impact on it. Will he, "change the colors" of our world, if you will.

I also see this song as kind of a, "release", if you will. It's Claudio stating that this record is the first time his music has truly reflected his thoughts and emotions. Those emotions are his alone, and while we can't experience them with him (let me go/where no one can follow), we can understand them. By expressing himself freely, without hiding behind the fantastic sci-fi thriller he created, he believes he can now be "buried honest."

The Part: "When I'm... free-eee-eeeeeeeeeee"

Claudio's voice is a truly unique one, and when the song calls for it, it can be incredibly soulful. For whatever reason, the way he sings these two lines strikes a chord in me I didn't know I had. They invoke a sense of wistful longing, and make an honest statement of finality. He has said what he needs to say, and he tells us that he can now go on in peace, into whatever his life has in store.

Can't wait to see you guys with the next album.
