Choir mics for live sound?
I can give you particulars of our setup in a moment, I'm just wondering in general what microphones any of you have had the most luck with for micing & mixing a choir live?
With that said... our church has been using Crown CM30 (supercardioid) mics, and I can't stand them. I met with my boss last week to wring out the mics, and even with the sanctuary completely empty and no audio playing, it was turning into a game of frequency whack-a-mole. We often have times when the orchestra overpowers the choir in their own mics, and the stage is fairly tight so we can only shuffle around the orchestra players so much.
I just read about the CAD/Astatic 1600VP mics and am especially interested because of their continuously variable pickup pattern. And also I believe they're large diaphragm, which I'm investigating at this point. Curious if any of you have experience with them, but am completely open to hearing about other mics-- even non "choir" microphones that can be successfully adapted to a good live choir setup.
