Computers/Tablets and any other useful packing ideas?

In October, I'm coming down to Amundsen-Scott as part of the NOAA Global Monitoring Division for a 12-month stay, obviously including Winter 2017 (Hello to anyone reading this I'll be sharing that experience with! Please introduce yourself, here or via PM).

This will be my first time, and I'm thinking a tablet would be a useful toy to have with me. What do past/present winter-over crew think of that idea? Any specific opinions on Amazon Fire vs Android, etc? I understand there will be ~14 hours of internet a day, and I thought this would be a good way to still have access to all the books in the world.

How about it, those of you who have done this? What are the good/bad ideas on tablets, or any other gear selection/packing question? What should I make sure/absolutely avoid bringing with me?
