My BS job is getting in the way...essentially just a source of income
I've been taking 2 or 3 CS/math undergrad courses these past 3 semesters and I would say learning programming/CS in general for 2 years now.
Because I need money, Ive held on to a job thats not doing anything for me; essentially I find marketing/sales leads on the internet for a startup (not tech related). Its alot of web scraping, Excel, etc.
My manager has been helpful, even wrote me a nicely written rec letter for a CS program. However, they just hired someone full time to take over alot of the stuff I do and more, since I work part time while going to school. They had told me a few weeks back after I asked to reduce my hours that this was probably going to happen, and asked me if I had anyone to recommend for the position. Now that they actually found someone, which I wasn't quite sure they would find, I've been told that they would keep me on but that they would have to figure out my role. My manager knows I belong elsewhere (writing code, being a swe) and has recommended I try to get a job anywhere I can as an engineer or simply take a loan if going the school route first.
Given that I feel like my job isn't doing anything for me than provide me some extra money, I'm considering walking away from the job. I feel like once the new person comes on I'd turn into a "door stop" for them and not much else. Leaving would mean I would not have any source of money coming in, but I'd at least get to focus on moving in the right direction. I'd be able to put more effort into prepping for interviews and wouldn't have to juggle this job, classes, and finding a real SWE job like I did the first 3 months of the year.
What do you guys recommend?
