Can /r/chemistry help me with ink chromatography?

For the last week in biochem we've been (attempting) an ink chromatography lab. We've tried the following solvents:

  • Methanol (40% water)

  • Ethanol (60% water)

  • Isopropanol (not sure if diluted or not)

  • Butanol (pure and diluted 50%)

  • Ethylene glycol

  • Water

For the ink we've been using normal pens.

However, none of these have "worked" in that we get no color separation. Our samples should look something like this, but instead of that we just have black/dark blue streaks instead of multiple colors. Does anyone know what could be going wrong?
