I made a friend on steam a year ago and he says he's dying. I'm not sure I believe him and I feel fucked up for thinking like that.

I've been friends with this guy for a year and we used to play rocket league. I don't play online too much anymore so I don't play games with friends at this time. when I first chatted with him he gifted me 3 games for a total of about $80. He said he was dying and did not have long to live. He wanted to give back. Of course I was extremely gracious and talked with him to help him cope.

The reason I'm skeptical is because I won't get on steam for days and all of a sudden I'll hear the chat alert. Every single time I have a gut wrenching feeling it's from this guy about his health getting worse. That's exactly what it is every time. I feel like when I don't show him attention for too long his health suddenly gets worse. He recently said he is dying again and only has a few weeks.

I don't know this person beyond rocket league. Should I be stressing about this random stranger who may or may not be dying? I'm going crazy trying to figure out if I'm mad at this stranger for bringing me into this or if I'm mad that I feel like it could be fake. I couldn't possibly call him out because it would be terrible if I were wrong.
