The Katana vs Straightsword vs Thrustsword vs "anything else"

Too early to weigh in on the "plauge" that "ruined" Dark Souls II PvP? I ask mostly because I have seen a ton of Washing Poles and Rapiers when invading/being invaded thus far.

I'm only to "That Ice Place" and SL 84 so I don't know how much Upgrade I'm missing or what not but I am curious to the Reddits thoughts thus far into the game. There's some really cool weapons though.
