Hamster babies help?
TIL that I became a grandma! Anyway, I bought two hamsters exactly a month ago. Had no idea that we had received a boy and a gal. LO and BEHOLD, we have babies.
BACKSTORY: Black hammie is mom, her name is Anakin Skywalker Wilson. Dad is Creature, named by a two year old in case you were wondering.
Anyway, Creature (DAD) exhibits cannibalistic behavior by eating one its young. We place him in a temporary enclosure. Go out and by a new cage and put mom and remaining babies (9 approximately) inside. She panics, places all of them in her mouth and tries to climb and dig her way out. I had to leave to go to football. So I put a towel on top of cage (to hopefully give peace and quiet) with lots of food and water. Also with some toilet paper for nesting.
I have received both the advice of moving her back to original cage because of familiar smells as well as just leaving her be and to not bother or stress her any further. When I arrived back home, I found two deceased babies on side of cage. I removed them, and gave Annie some lettuce bits, as she reached for them she had babies attached nursing. So I'm assuming alive?
ALL TIPS APPRECIATED. Should I maybe put some of the old bedding in new cage? Leave her alone? Put her and babes back into old cage?
