Tried Vive, long time DK2 user.
Just thought I'd throw my opinion up. Got to have a couple of goes on Tiltbrush at a VR meetup.
It wasn't mind blowing, not being my first taste of VR, and having soaked up so much DK2 content, but here are my observations:
-
Resolution, Hz, screen door all instantly/noticeably improved over a DK2.
-
Didn't notice any FOV improvement, but that has never worried me.
-Hand controllers were impressive, but will only be useful in certain content, obviously.
-
The headset felt heavier than DK2, but not heavy enough to dampen the experience.
-
Being used to sitting down using my DK2, standing up and having controllers tracked when my hands moved down towards my ankles was a novelty.
-
Chaperone was an annoyance, rather than a cool feature. Not having tried other demos, I cant feel how that would be useful.. Just use an omni treadmill and room scale becomes mostly irrelevant to me anyway.
Conclusion:
Excited to try more demos to put the vive through its paces if I ever get the chance, but I feel coming from a DK2 and being invested in content made for it the CV1 might be a better choice for me, hopefully I get to try one, then win the lottery so I can afford one.
I think the vive will be popular with devs wanting to flesh out hand tracking experiences, but Rift will be more popular with average Joe, and probably am easier sell, aesthetics/ergonomics are more important than most of us VR nerds think.
