How much is too much for rent?

If you had 300$ that could go into rent, and let you live in a fancier and nicer place that you'd normally do, or could be saved and you'd live in a modest flat instead, what would you do? Is it a crazy idea to pay roughly 1.3 times the rent you should pay, just to spoil (over-spoil?) yourself?

Context: someone in early 30s, starting life almost from scratch (moving countries, etc), having some savings and able to afford a property's down payment in 3 - 5 years (would depend on the life style until then?)
