Very Basic Amazon Help

NSFW

Disclosure: I'm not an expert on Amazon's website, marketing for that particular publishing platform, and I'm not going into the KU or Going Wide debate. What I do know how to do is upload to Amazon. I know how to publish a book there. Since the sidebar isn't always accurate, and since the other users on EA choose to mock those asking for help... here's some very basic help. Don't like the advice? Correct the statements with current and accurate information.

  • Start by deciding what length you want to write. The longer works do better in the KU program, but for new authors this could lead to "flops" more often. Instead many authors choose to write shorter works 3k - 7k or so, and publish as many as possible. This allows authors to learn what works, what took off, and any improvements that need to be made. Either way, consistency is extremely important when publishing on Amazon (think visibility). Be sure before you start writing to read what is or is not acceptable on Amazon! They're vague guidelines but here: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?ref_=kdp_EB_UB_gl&topicId=A3KIRDTX1UQJX0

  • Once you've decided what to write... write! Formatting requirements for your eBook will vary on who you ask... but Amazon has a resource right on their website: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A17W8UM0MMSQX6 Read it!

  • Publishing pretty much anywhere requires a cover. You can try making them yourself, or purchasing them. Again, this will vary, but you need a cover regardless. Try browsing the top sellers for ideas on cover design if you're doing it yourself, or you can find some pretty good designs on places like Fiverr that are cheap (just remember you get what you pay for).

  • Create your Amazon account (obviously) and then simply follow the uploading process (I know it sounds easier than it is the first time but don't be nervous).

  • Never choose a category that doesn't apply to your book! Put the book in Romance if it's Romance ... or Erotica for Erotica. Don't mess around trying to get around the filters. You will eventually be found. Don't. Just don't. You can find what words trigger categories here: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A19G4ONBAU6NO3

  • Price strategy varies author to author and by book length. Many authors opt for $2.99 for the higher royalty rate, but many charge $.99 for shorts. Some try both. Longer works will vary even more. Generally accepted (or favorable) prices: $.99, $2.99, $4.95, $9.95

Tips on Metadata:

  • For keywords try coming up with words you would search for to find your book. Example: Would you be more likely to search for menage or threesome?

  • Read the description threads here for advice on how to write better ones. Descriptions take practice... they're a skill... but it's key.

  • Publish often. Take advantage of every opportunity you can (don't pass up promos or marketing just know how best to use them!) and gain consistent readership!

  • Once you find what works stick with it! Do research. Keep adapting. Don't get distracted though, again consistency is key!

  • Start an Amazon Author Page: https://authorcentral.amazon.com/

  • Research! Make a plan stick with it. Examine after the said set time has gone by.

Lastly, do your own research. Read every resource available. Read in general. Publishing varies widely by category, motivation, time, and effort. This isn't an end all be all list. It's a basic ... very basic... list. I just couldn't stand to see the lack of help to authors' questions... especially with the sidebar being difficult for some. We were all new once. Just remember, don't be nervous. It's exciting to publish your first book... go for it! :)
