Occupied Room Keys On Check In
So part of this is tale and part of this is question. Ill start with a tale.
For 5 years I have been a frequent traveler. (Hilton diamond for 5 years and both diamond and marriott gold for the last 3) Spending about 80% of my year on the road travelling all over the world. Only twice have I been given a key to an occupied room. The 2nd time just happened this morning.
I checked in at 2am for a 3 day stay. Im going home Saturday. I landed at 12:10. And I got to the hotel at the far end of the airport. At 2am. Between assholes driving 10mph below the speed limit on a one lane road, construction, road closures and stuff, it took me a full hour to get from the rental car counter to a hotel. A hotel AT the airport. So I pull into this hotel parking lot and find 5 parking lots all of which are closed off and a self parking area with a gate on it and a $20 charge for parking. So I screeched my tires pulling in about 100 yards outside of the valet area. Being 2am I got a valet who was looking at the sunroof and not quite sure how to close it. I had to close it for him. By the time I got to the front desk I was not happy but I was careful not to let that through. Checkin was uneventful. Front desk swiped the keys and assigned me a room. Welcomed me with water and cookies and that was that.
I go up to the room and start trying to swipe the key. Doesnt work. i try a few times. Double check the room number and try again. All of a sudden the door opens and a very irate person starts yelling at me for waking them up and trying to break into their room. I show them the phamplet with the room number on it and apologize. I walk down to the lobby. Just in time to see the person who checked me in to see me and walk quickly away from the front desk to disappear in the office. I walk up to the front desk and have to hit the bell 3 times (with a clear long pause between each ring) before someone shows up. Not the same person who checked me in and not the same person I just saw about 30 seconds ago as I was walking up to the front desk.
They give me a new room. Of course... the original room was on floor 20 overlooking the airport and the replacement is on floor 3 overlooking... the roof and a wall. But I can see the sky! Yay?
So... for me the customer. Between the room key not working for the room I was assigned that was already occupied and coming back to the front desk only to see the attendant run off and send someone else out to deal with me... this looks like it was purely 100% on purpose.
Am I reading this wrong as a customer?
The reason I think this was on purpose:
-
As a frequent traveler being given a key to an occupied room has only happened one other time.
-
The key I was given didn't actually open the room even though i was at the right room I was assigned.
-
When I came back to the front desk the original person who helped me left quickly and sent another person out. Granting that person deniability while escaping the possibility of lying and having to face repercussions of actions.
-
As someone who has stayed at this particular hotel multiple times and an elite member of their loyalty program I was downgraded to a bottom floor room rather than putting me in a higher level suite which was showing as available on their website. As a frequent traveler my experience is... "We fucked up, here is a benefit for you at no charge." Not... we fucked up... here let us fuck you some more and give you an even worse room. I have spent about 20 nights at this particular hotel already over the years.
