Ideas for determining the amount of filament left on a spool

1. If the spool had level markers on the inside wall, it could show the amount (in grams or meters) left.

2. If the weight of the cassette was imprinted on the outside, you could weigh the spool and calculate the difference.

Why aren't either of these done? Is there an easier way that I'm missing?
