[EVENT] Restoring A Steady Pulse

EVENT

Mauritania's economy has been in shambles for quite some time. Minimal growth combined with poor leadership of the prior government, slavery, and child labor has led to a terrible situation. A plague has taken hold, and strangled the country.

Over the next five years Mauritania with the heavy assistance of Libya every step of the way embark on a number of projects. The first area is infrastructure, to stimulate the jobs and economy.

  • Modernization and expansion of Mauritanian roads and highways. This will constitute repaving poorly maintained roads, widening major highway transport corridors, and paving secondary roads that may've been dirt, gravel, or sand before. The section of the Trans-Africa highway network that runs through Mauritania will also be expanded significantly by two lanes on each side, along with more efficient interchanges to reduce car accidents and traffic jams. A Nouakchott bypass will also be built to make a semi-circle around the city dozens of miles past it's city limits - planning for further growth and expansion of the city itself decades down the road. This initiative is expected to cost $2.5 (Bil.) and take 3 years to fully complete.

  • Modernization of the Nouakchott shipyards and container terminals. This will include expansion of the sea container capacity, modernization of piers, docking, and boat jockeying facilities. Electronic integration and computerization will also be an important part of such an operation. Cleaning up the harbor of any abandoned ships and scrapping them will take place before construction begins. Nouadhibou will be given some attention, but focus will remain on Nouakchott due to the location of Nouadhibou and it's size relative to Nouakchott. ($750 Mil.) and one and three quarters years is the expected budget and timeframe.

  • Airport terminals at NDB, NKC, and OUZ will all be modernized, with NKC receiving a new small terminal. The runways will be modernized, expanded, and redrawn if needed to better allow plane jockeying, more efficient operations, and more cargo to run through the airports in general. All other airports will have their runways paved. Projections say the project should take $3 (Bil.) and three and a half years to complete.

  • Construction of three desalination plants one in Nouadhibou, two in Nouakchott, to provide clean drinking water to the populace of these cities and the surrounding area. The construction will also be accompanied with an upgrade/renovation in sewer and piping throughout the country. $1.25 (Bil.) will be spent on such a project, taking three years total. The technology for desalination will come from Libya at no cost to Mauritania.

  • The $1 (Bil.) of the remaining $1.5 (Bil.) of the endowment will be used to bring solar and wind power to Mauritania to allow the country to be further electrified with cheap and reliable electricity.

We will work to employ as many Mauritanians as possible as opposed to Libyans in such projects, and will also provide on the job training to those who wish to learn the skill as a full time trade.
