Bit of a different question... for those of you coming from tech backgrounds, did you previously come from a career in networking or programming? How did that contribute to where you are now?

I apologize if this sounds similar to another thread I posted earlier... I'm currently in an awkward position right now. I'm in school studying Information Technology (networking) however I'm midway through my degree right now only to find that I really don't like networking and much rather prefer programming or software development.

It's not possible for me to change majors. Money is a huge factor for me.

I'm currently interested in certain industries - health, finance, security and marketing/development to name a few. Out of all of these I find security to be a huge industry with a lot of potential now, and in the future. I'm not sure which tech field would give me the most potential in opening my own firm or agency, however. I'm currently being self-taught at programming, but I'm not sure if this would have a strong impact in factoring into a career in security.

For those of you who do come from any tech careers, what are you doing now, and what led you to it?
