[QUESTION] how do i play chords?

Ive played bass for many years so whenever I play guitar im a god @ playing individual notes and some really easy chords like A or Am... but if it gets any more complicated than that it just doesnt happen. Strings get accidently muted, it takes forever to transition between different chords, stuff just doesnt come out right, etc. anyone have any chord tips? ty
