Just had an informal interview today, I'm starting training tomorrow at a local Subway into the weekend, no pay. I'm in NJ. Is this legal?

A Subway owner in town more or less promised me a job, but then said his brother, who owns the Subway in the next town over, needs me more than he does. The same day (today) that I get that call, I go in and am showed the ropes a little bit and told to come in tomorrow for four hours, Sat for four, and Sun for five. No pay. I feel like this is fishy, y/n? He even said that "in general Subway is allowed 40 hours unpaid training".

EDIT: (a) thank you so much for downvoting an honest question guys. (b) I'm going to call the NJ DOL tomorrow morning (my training starts in the afternoon) and ask them if this is a legitimate practice.

EDIT DEUX: Thank you to u/8246962 for providing me with a real citation of the law!
