Teardown: inductors covered in kapton tape?
I'm a security engineer who (occasionally) works on embedded devices. Part of this is I often hunt for UARTs and JTAG pins on the boards. One of the devices I have for assessment has clear yellow tape (probably kapton tape) across 3 SMD inductors (3 separate pieces of tape on 3 separate inductors), and I can't figure out why this would be. The chassis is plastic and there's no metal behind the board, and many other components are much thicker (i.e., polymer electrolytic caps and a large transformer for the switching PSU), so it doesn't seem to be about avoiding shorts. The tape is clearly centered on the inductors, even though it covers a few other components, and no other tape is used anywhere on the board. Can anyone shed light on why this might be?
