Is it possible to unlock bootloader on Redmi 3?

Title. I read somewhere that it may only be for Redmi Note 3 Pro and not the Redmi 3.

If it is possible would I have to flash my ROM to the Chinese developer version before I can continue with the unlock after I have been granted permission from Xiaomi?
