Are there any insurance premiums lower than the one I currently have? (complicated situation)
I am an international student in the US, living in SE Michigan. I was able to find a relatively cheap insurance for my 1998 Nissan Altima. All the other car insurance companies that are supposed to find the cheapest quote for me (like Geico) gave me quotes like $300+ per month.
I received my driver's license in October 2014, and I was 18 at the time. I had no prior driving history which, to my understanding, made the quotes go higher. Also, I was living with four other people (and three of them had long and clean driving records) so I think that that made the quotes go down a little bit.
However, the cheapest insurance that I could get was through Farm Bureau, I have to pay semi-annually and it has ranged from $630 all the way up to $875. This is a half-coverage insurance. To be honest, I don't even know what my insurance covers, I just knew that I needed an insurance asap so I got whatever the cheapest was.
Today, I received the statement from my car insurance company (I live in an apartment now which is under my relative's name, not with the four people that I was living before) and I have to pay $715 for the next 6 months. Looking at the statement, I have to pay $75 for something listed under "HOMEOWNERS" which to my understanding, would be the fee for the homeowners insurance. The problem is that even though I do not live with those four people anymore, I still have their house's address on my driver's license and car insurance. I already pay renter's insurance so I would rather not pay that extra 75 dollars.
I know that I don't have a long driving record because I have only been in the states for two years. However, my buddy, who lives in Texas and is also an international student, pays about half of what I do. So I was thinking maybe this is a Michigan thing because every company that I have asked for a quote has given me something above $300 per month. I have a clean record (I have had two tickets for really bad speeding situations, but I hired a lawyer in both cases and I never got a point on my record, I only had to pay the fines, but car insurance companies are not able to see that because that is not reported to car insurance companies) and I know that there are a few discounts I can get (such as the good student discount).
Is there anything I can do? Is there anybody else in the same situation as I am and has a cheaper insurance? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
