Islam & Christianity - The unchanging text and its hate.

Meta

Hello,

I bring this topic up on a regular basis as I refine its wording and also because I also think, for theists, it is the hardest contention to defend. It is also only really presented for the two major religions and arguably the most dangerous.

This topic for debate consists of 3 main aspects which converge into one major issue with Biblical and Islamic scripture and the religions in general.

  • One. The Quran and the bible are either totally or partially believed to be divinely inspired and/or the direct word of god.
  • Two. The Quran and the bible are unchanging - meaning that nothing in them will be changed, adjusted or amended.
  • Three. When Christianity or Islam gain theocratic power, as history has shown (there are present reality based examples too), believers act in accordance with their scriptures decrees and laws that come out of them.

Both religious scripture of the Quran and the Bible harbor many decrees of intolerance, violence and various other dubious practices. Often it is told that these decrees must be taken in their context (moral relativism) or that they are misinterpreted etc. Issues with the scripture consists of:

  • One. Inferring that the immoral decrees have some context in which they would be considered moral
  • Two. Require interpretation, implying that they are unclear and need their meanings adjusted on a case by case basis.

The fact is, there are many examples of murder, irrational intolerance and quite hateful decrees in both the Quran and the Bible that are seemingly very direct and leave little to no room for being interpreted in any other fashion. Many of those teachings, no matter the context, will never be considered "moral" (slavery for example). The fact that any of it needs interpreting is already a red herring, considering the fact that the interpretations often vary drastically, also no one in any field of authority on the subject matter, ever reach a unanimous conclusion and, even if they do, it ultimately doesn't matter because the books are never updated with those "interpretations". With those points considered, the Quran and Bible are basically time bombs, slowly ticking away, unchanging, waiting for a time when they can persuade the masses to follow its decree and forcing theocratic laws upon the nations they find themselves in, often to the detriment of unbelievers and women.

How can these two religions ever expect to resolve these issues?

EDIT I am happy to give examples in each religions scripture, should any theist of those beliefs wish, of the types of decrees I have mentioned.
