Need some advice...

Hi everyone,

I started seeing a girl a couple months ago; things have been going really well, we seem to click on a lot of things, are into a lot of the same things, etc. I'm 23, and she is 24. I'm her first "serious" relationship-ish-thing (she's still hesitant to put a label on it). We both moved here to NYC last summer. She is from a Mexican family in CA. Her parents are both conservative.

Well, last night we were having one of our regular chats over the phone, and she asked me about my/my family's political views. Then she asked who I was supporting for the presidency. Now, I had suspicions she might be a Bernie supporter, but wasn't sure; either way, I tried to play it safe and decline to answer. She wouldn't have it.

So I eventually told her I like Trump, that I used to not be pro-Trump largely due to the dishonest media, and that I used to think he was a joke/clown candidate, but that I had changed my mind after doing some research. She interjected here, and said that not only is he a joke, but is "a racist jerk" who has said horrible things about women. I asked her how he is racist. She couldn't come up with anything (of course). She tried to say basically he just is, but I didn't let her get away with that. I offered to prove to her that he's not racist, but she just started repeating the word "No" as if trying to shut me up. Then she said "Well, even if he's not racist, he's still an asshole" and that Trump "is not a kind person" (but Bernie is a kind person). She said that she's not thrilled with the everything Obama has done, but that "at least he has class. Trump is just crass". And she said that although she has problems with Hillary, she would vote Hillary if Bernie doesn't get the nomination, as the lesser evil (compared to Trump or Cruz).

Now, I know some of you are probably going to say run for the hills/break it off right now. And I hear you. But the fact that she pretty easily conceded "Well even if he's not racist..." gives me hope that she may be willing to open her eyes more to the truth. She seemed pretty shocked/upset that I support Trump, but told me it didn't change her opinion of me and that she respects me still. She said that Cruz and Trump "are fucking idiots". I pointed out that I wasn't referring to Bernie or Hillary as that, and she said the reason I'm not is "because they aren't"... She wound up apologizing for bringing up the topic, period. Said she would be happy to have a nice long argument/discussion sometime in person.

What is the best way to approach this? What links should I show her that could help turn her around? She's a really sweet person, and contrary to most BernieBots, she has a job. (She is a stage management intern at a top music conservatory. She also has some summer jobs lined up.) Admittedly, her job doesn't pay very well, and she oftentimes finds herself working crazy hours, like 9 AM to 9 or 10 PM on some days. I don't know if she thinks Bernie will somehow help with this, or what, but she isn't the lazy sort of person we usually like to make fun of here. Far from it.

I largely suspect that she's just been indoctrinated by the same media buzzwords and inaccurate word of mouth that tends to hate on Trump. It was very telling that she didn't really have any examples to back her up, of how horrible he supposedly is.

So, I'm basically wondering how best I can convince her that 1. Trump is not a bad person. 2. I am not a bad person for supporting Trump. 3. Trump's policies actually make sense. 4. If she still picks Bernie, she doesn't need to hate on Trump supporters. It's okay to pick your candidate for their policies/values, but don't throw around stupid buzzwords and rumors about a candidate that simply aren't true. Any advice on how to convey this?

P.S. She said she hopes I eventually change my mind about Bernie. And when I said that I had been scared the past few weeks to mention this to her, she said maybe that's a sign that I am supporting the wrong candidate. -_-
