[Total War] - Really bummed the direction they went, would a WWI/WWII be better?
So my favorite game of the series is Empire, far and beyond all others. Guns just add something to those games that the other parts of the series lack. Usually battles in Rome et cetera (for me) just consisted of throwing troops at the other army and hoping to win because I had more/better, but being able to maneuver, use cavalry infantry and artillery as three arms was really great. The different kind of factions meant significantly different tactics to face off against the different troops. Napoleon was better, but much more limited in scope and started the movement towards storyline.
Then they went back to what they already did before, literally. Then Atilla was going to be terrible before it got released due to all the DLC. Warhammer seems good, but to me it's likely going to be more of the same - I don't play the table top game so I'm not really fanboying right now.
One of the better parts of Empire was the WWI mods, but it could even be better if a AAA developer did it. Imagine deploying tanks, artillery, cavalry, aircraft across Europe and the world. You could have to secure certain areas to draw the right raw materials. Each faction would be hugely different. Russia would start underdeveloped but have huge resources, Germany would be the opposite. Britain would have a navy and trade, able to draw income from colonies even as it loses allies on the continent. The US would have the resources, manpower, and strategically would be easily defended, but would have to project force from a distance. Et cetera et cetera.
Basically it would be a combination of Paradox's Hearts of Iron with Eugens Wargame, encompassing both the strategic and political as well as tactical and operational in a franchise we're all familiar with. Thoughts?
