Diving New Sites

I'm a newish diver and I am wanting to branch out to new dive sites. I've mainly been diving sites I did my various courses with so I am fairly familiar with them or with someone already familiar with the site.

How do you go about diving a new site (especially somewhere you don't know anyone)? Hire a local guide? What kind of research do you do beforehand to plan your dive?
