Sock yarn question [Help]

Sock yarn seems very expensive and I'm wondering if it's that much better for socks? I've been using regular fingering yarn and the socks come out nicely. But they wear so quickly - it seems to only take a couple wears before I have holes starting at the heel and ball of my foot/sock.

Does sock yarn last better? Or am I just doing something wrong?
